Ron and Roger Franzen, co-owners of Franzen Sales & Service Ltd. in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, have been members of the American Legion Unit 672 Huber Steffes for nearly 50 years. The brothers served in the Army during the Vietnam War – Ron in the military police and Roger in communications.
Ron currently serves as the vice commander and finance officer of the Unit, which is 42 members strong. The group holds its meetings at the local fire station.
Every year, the American Legion holds one major fundraiser in conjunction with the town’s annual Rendezvous Days, a festival held by the old Fort Atkinson Military Post where people reenact what life would have been like in the 1840s. The brothers help operate a food stand during the festival to generate funds for the organization.
Ron also assists with military rites at funerals and ceremonies throughout the year. On Memorial Day, he helps at four area cemeteries and a local Veterans Memorial. “I assist with military rights to show my patriotism and respect for my fellow veterans,” reflected Ron.
